Uli PicHi, All!

I am Uli, a first-year MDEV student from Los Angeles, California. I am a newcomer to student committees at the Institute, however, I have observed the numerous ways in which GISA contributes to student life and well-being. I wish to build on the current committee’s excellent work by effectively liaising between the Institute’s administration and students, and putting together events that respond to students’ academic and recreational interests.

I intend to prioritize the following areas during my term:

    • Strengthening disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs. Many of you bring your concerns to the Master’s Forum. I would like to continue being an active voice for students within the Institute’s administration, especially as changes are made that directly impact students’ academic requirements.
    • Improving a course feedback tool for students. Students can benefit from past student reviews on certain classes. I would like to work with the Institute’s administration to develop a student-friendly review mechanism.

  • Enhancing exchange across programs and years. Some students have voiced concerns about the insufficient exchange taking place among students across programs as well as between current students and alumni. I would like to foster exchange between current students and alumni and across programs.

  • Creating a more student-friendly environment at the Institute. A handful of students have raised concerns about the Institute’s shortcomings in accommodating student needs, such as adding a microwave in an accessible area, integrating more lounge areas, or extending library closing hours during specific periods of the academic year.
  • Improving the Institute’s use of space. When warmer weather eventually blesses Geneva, a more effective use of space could include adding more outdoor seating areas for students between Petal 1 and 2 along the train-tracks side of the Institute.
  • Tackling the ventilation issue at the Institute. We are well aware of the Institute’s ventilatory shortcomings. I intend to look into what more can be done to improve this area for students.
  • Strengthening GISA’s communication with students. I will work closely with GISA’s coordinator to ensure that students are aware of recent news and events at the Institute.
  • Increasing coordination between committees and initiatives. I intend to work with student leaders from different committees to improve cohesion and collaboration.
  • Introducing a “Save the Snacks and Wine” initiative. Students could benefit from leftover snacks and wine from the events that the Institute hosts on evenings. At the same time, I would like to explore more opportunities to offer students these breaks throughout the academic year or during finals period.
  • Integrating more recreational activities. We all could use an occasional break from the library. Additional recreational activities can range from putting together a sports tournament to organizing a “Pet a Pet” Day.

There are several issues that students have raised and will continue to bring to the attention of GISA. I would like to serve as your student representative to bring these concerns to the attention of the student body and the Institute’s administration.

I am happy to meet with you before tomorrow’s debate! If you have any specific questions, suggestions, or concerns, please come talk to me tomorrow (Friday, 12 May) in the cafeteria between 13h and 15h. (If you can’t meet me in person, you can always reach me via email at ulises.ceja@graduateinstitute.ch!).

I hope I can count on your vote!
